A life threatening illness does not
always have to stop you exercising.
I have attended Bob's fitness sessions for the past 3 years. His sessions are a great mix which include cardio, core fitness in Bob's own, purpose built, gym and running. We also use Sutton Park.
In September 2014 I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, which came as a complete shock, as I had been training to run my first full marathon at the end of that month. I was devastated and didn't know how I would cope with this life threatening illness. Chemotherapy started almost immediately but in that short space of time I had lost a lot of weight and my fitness levels were ZERO. I could barely walk!
After 2 rounds of treatment I decided I needed to take back control and start doing some exercise, which had been such a massive part of my life prior to becoming ill. With the FULL backing of my medical team I returned to Bob's fitness sessions. With Bob's support and encouragement I was able to take part in his sessions and although I wanted to still push myself, I also needed to be sensible, take it easy and listen to my body.
I had major abdominal surgery in February 2015, and was finally able to start running again in April 2015. l am still receiving regular treatment and it has been, and still is, very challenging and much harder for me to do what I did before - not surprising!
My medical team have actively encouraged me to exercise as it has been proven that any regular exercise, such as walking, running or swimming, can have such a positive impact on a person' s mental and physical well being. I would really encourage anyone to consider making exercise a part of their life - it doesn't matter how much you do, anything is better than doing nothing.
I have been told that my level of fitness prior to becoming ill, together with such a positive approach has certainly helped me over the past 14 months.
